I would like to congratulate Sen. Sessions on a well deserved landslide victory over Democratic nominee Vivian Figures in the 2008 race.  A State Senator representing the mostly Black City of Mobile, Figures was elected to that office after the passing of her husband; President Pro-Temp Michael A. Figures.  Not known for much more than her bill to ban smoking in bars and diners, Figures became the U.S. Senate nominee by default when both Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks and Black Belt Congressman Artur Davis declined to run.  Both Sparks and Artur Davis realized it would be futile to challenge the strong conservative incumbant, especially with Hillary Clinton or Barack Hussein Obama leading the ticket.  Perhaps both are looking to run in the 2010 open Governor’s race, or the most likely open U.S. Senate race.
